Nurlan edits the English newsletter at his school in Astana. Before each issue, the club meets its teacher, Mr Hill, to check the sentences in the articles. Mr Hill explains that every complete sentence needs a subject and a predicate. For example, "The students visited the museum." is a simple sentence because it has one subject and one predicate. A compound sentence joins two equal main clauses with a conjunction such as and, but or so: "The museum was crowded, but the guide spoke clearly." A complex sentence has one main clause and at least one subordinate clause: "Although it was raining, the students walked to the museum." Mr Hill also reminds the club that sentences have different purposes. A declarative sentence gives information, an interrogative sentence asks a question, an imperative sentence gives an order or advice, and an exclamatory sentence expresses strong feeling. In Nurlan's draft article there are three such sentences: "Where did the group go after lunch?", "Please bring your tickets." and "What a beautiful building it was!" Mr Hill also found three mistakes. The first was "Went to the park after lunch." The second was "We visited the park, we took many photos." Two main clauses cannot be joined by a comma alone; the writer should add a conjunction such as and, use a semicolon, or start a new sentence. The third mistake was in word order. In an English statement the usual order is subject, verb, object, so "Yesterday visited our class the museum." sounded strange. Nurlan corrected all three mistakes, and the next issue of the newsletter was ready on Friday.
